Below: the spread, prices by region, what you get, and how often the session comes free with a wedding package.

What photographers charge
Most sessions cost a few hundred dollars, with a long tail above $1,000. The cheapest published price was $150 and the highest $2,500. These are the lowest full-session prices each photographer lists, so a “starting at” price can rise with a second location or more time.
| Price | Photographers |
|---|---|
| Under $300 | 26 (9%) |
| $300–$449 | 62 (21%) |
| $450–$599 | 98 (34%) |
| $600–$799 | 63 (22%) |
| $800–$999 | 28 (10%) |
| $1,000 or more | 15 (5%) |
Engagement photo prices by region
Where you live matters less than which photographer you pick. Regional medians run from $500 to $550 (West highest), while within every region the middle half spans a few hundred dollars. We don’t publish city figures: with about eight photographers per city, a single expensive studio would move the number.
| Region | Median | Middle half | Photographers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Northeast | $500 | $400–$750 | 29 in 4 metros |
| Midwest | $500 | $400–$575 | 67 in 9 metros |
| South | $500 | $390–$650 | 109 in 16 metros |
| West | $550 | $415–$700 | 87 in 11 metros |
How long it lasts and how many photos you get
The median session is 60 minutes; 54 of the 211 photographers who state a length offer 90 minutes or more. Photographers who give an exact number promise a median of 40 edited photos (middle half 23–60), about 40 per hour of shooting (108 state both). Many promise “all the best images” instead of a number; ask for a rough count.
Photos arrive in about 2 weeks at the median (65 photographers say). For save-the-dates, book the session at least two months before you want to mail them. To time the session itself, use the golden hour calculator.
Is it included with your wedding photographer?
Often. Of the 118 photographers whose sites say either way, 88 (75%) include an engagement session in at least one wedding package, usually the mid or top tier. WeddingWire reports that 62% of couples do an engagement shoot (WeddingWire, undated). If you have booked, or will book, a wedding photographer, check the package before paying for a separate session.
How this compares with other sources
Thumbtack says engagement photographers on its marketplace charge $150 to $499 an hour, most people pay about $200 an hour, and packages run $100 to $500 or more (Thumbtack, Aug 11, 2025). WeddingWire puts a session at $150 to over $600 (WeddingWire, undated). Our median is higher because it counts photographers’ own published session prices, which are mostly wedding photographers’ engagement sessions, rather than marketplace quotes. For wedding-day prices, see wedding photographer cost.
Method
On October 18, 2026, we searched “engagement photographer [city] pricing” and similar for 40 US metro areas and opened results in order. A photographer counted only if their own website gave a number for a standalone engagement or couples session; directory and marketplace sites (Thumbtack, The Knot, WeddingWire, Yelp, Zola) were skipped. Of 469 photographer sites opened, 164 gave no standalone price. Each record is the lowest full session (mini sessions under 45 minutes skipped when a longer one was offered); for ranges, length and photo counts use the low end and delivery the high end.
Limits: photographers who publish prices, and who rank in search, may differ from those who don’t. The sample is about eight photographers per metro, enough for national and regional medians but not for city figures. We record numbers only and publish no individual photographer’s prices. We re-compile the index each spring. More on how we research our guides.
Seeing your photos before you book
Our AI packages show the two of you in places and outfits from a selfie each, so you can decide on a setting and show a photographer what you like. They are AI images, not a photographer’s session, and don’t replace one. How it works is on the AI engagement photos guide.
