By the hour: Thumbtack says most people pay about $150 an hour (Thumbtack, 2025), and The Knot’s 2026 figures imply about $375 an hour. Most wedding photographers quote a package for the day, so the hourly number is mostly useful for comparing quotes with different hours.

Wedding photographer cost by region

Couples in the Mid-Atlantic paid the most, $3,800 on average, and couples in the Southwest the least, $2,600 (The Knot, May 8, 2026). Zola’s index, which runs higher overall, also lists cities: $5,000 for New York City and $3,600 for Salt Lake City, against its national $4,400 (Zola, Feb 19, 2026).

By wedding size

Bigger weddings cost more to photograph: $2,000 on average for up to 50 guests, $2,700 for 51 to 100, and $3,500 for more than 100 (The Knot, May 8, 2026). Larger weddings often mean longer coverage and more family groupings.

What a wedding photography package includes

Hours of coverage are the core of every package. WeddingWire says packages typically include between six hours and an unlimited amount of coverage, and additional hours cost extra (WeddingWire, undated). Beyond the hours, packages differ in a few things to get in writing:

  • Whether a second photographer comes, and for which parts of the day.
  • How many edited photos you receive, and how they are delivered (an online gallery, downloads, prints).
  • Whether an engagement session, an album or travel is part of the price.
  • When the photos arrive. One photographer quoted by The Knot put it at 3 to 12 weeks (The Knot, 2019); Thumbtack says several weeks (Thumbtack, Aug 11, 2025).

Zola’s index describes basic, standard and premium tiers, and the engagement session is the clearest difference: sometimes an add-on at basic, usually included at standard, included at premium (Zola, Feb 19, 2026).

How much do engagement photos cost?

Usually a few hundred dollars. Thumbtack says engagement photographers charge $150 to $499 an hour, most people pay around $200 an hour, and packages run from $100 to $500 or more, with about 30 to 60 photos delivered (Thumbtack, Aug 11, 2025). WeddingWire puts a session at $150 to over $600 (WeddingWire, undated).

Many couples don’t pay for it separately. WeddingWire reports that 62 percent of couples do a pre-wedding engagement shoot, and Zola says it is usually included in standard wedding packages and included in premium ones. If you book the session on its own, The Knot quotes one Los Angeles photographer’s estimate of $300 to $3,000 or more (The Knot, Dec 9, 2025): one photographer’s view, not survey data.

Elopement photographer cost

Zola says photographing the ceremony alone could average $1,500, and that longer coverage or a photographer who travels with you can run upwards of $6,000 (Zola, Feb 19, 2026). The range is wide because an elopement can be twenty minutes at a courthouse or a full day on a mountain. For a small wedding with guests, The Knot’s average for up to 50 guests was $2,000.

Couples or anniversary session

A couples portrait session costs $251 on average on Thumbtack (Thumbtack, Jan 22, 2025), in line with its engagement rates. It is close to an engagement session, without the wedding-day timeline.

Why the sources disagree

They count different things. The Knot asks couples what they actually spent after the wedding. Zola’s index is built from the prices photographers list on its marketplace. WeddingWire uses what couples report in their reviews. Thumbtack shows the estimates photographers quote on its site, mostly per hour. So a survey of spending and a list of asking prices can be $2,400 apart and both be accurate.

None of these pages says exactly who is in its sample beyond that, so we show all four rather than averaging them. If you want one number, The Knot’s is the most clearly described: 10,474 couples, married in 2025, published May 8, 2026.

How to budget for a wedding photographer

Start from the figure closest to your wedding: your region and your guest count above. Then compare quotes like for like, because two prices for different hours or deliverables aren’t comparable. Ask each photographer:

  • How many hours does this cover, and what does an extra hour cost?
  • Is a second photographer included, or an extra?
  • Roughly how many edited photos will we get, and by what date? Can that date go in the contract?
  • Are travel, an engagement session, an album or prints included?
  • What is the deposit, when is the rest due, and what happens if the date moves?
  • Can we print and share the photos, and for how long is the gallery online?

Ask to see one or two full wedding galleries, not only highlights, so you know what the whole day looks like from that photographer.

Seeing your photos before you book

Before you choose a photographer, it can help to know what you want: the place, the light, the outfits. Our AI packages, from $49, show the two of you in places and outfits from one selfie each, so you can plan the real shoot and show a photographer what you like. They are AI images, not a photographer’s coverage of your real day, and they don’t replace one. How it works is on the AI engagement photos guide.
