Step by step
- Stand side by side; the carried partner puts one arm around the carrier's neck.
- The carrier bends their knees, places one arm across the carried partner's upper back and the other behind their knees.
- Lift with the legs, not the back, and pull the carried partner close to your chest.
- Look at each other or laugh; hold it only for a few seconds at a time.
Tips
- Keep the carried partner high against the chest; it is easier and looks better.
- If carrying isn't comfortable, a piggyback gives the same playful energy.
Bridal carry vs princess carry
They are the same hold. "Bridal carry," "bridal style," "princess carry" and "princess style carry" all describe carrying someone in front of you with one arm under their back and one under their knees. The name comes from the tradition of carrying a new spouse over the threshold.
Other ways to carry someone for photos
Piggyback: the rider climbs onto the carrier's back and holds on over the shoulders. Easier on the carrier than a bridal carry, and both faces stay close together.
Front carry (koala carry): the carried partner faces the carrier with legs wrapped around their waist. Playful, but best for casual engagement photos rather than in a wedding dress.
Fireman's carry: the carried person is draped over one shoulder. It's a rescue hold, not a romantic pose, and rarely flattering in photos.
Reverse bridal carry: the usual roles swapped. Popular for a funny or playful frame.
Lift and spin: the carrier lifts their partner at the waist for a moment, often mid-twirl. Fast and full of energy.
