How to do the dip kiss pose
Also called: the dip, tango kiss, dramatic dip
The movie-moment pose: one partner dips the other back and kisses them.
See the two of you in this pose
Step by step
- Stand facing each other; the dipping partner puts one hand firmly on the other's upper back.
- The partner being dipped holds the dipper's shoulder and keeps their core engaged.
- The dipper steps forward with one foot and lowers the other partner back a short way, bending at the knees, not the waist.
- Kiss at the bottom of the dip, then come back up slowly.
Tips
- A shallow dip looks just as dramatic on camera and is far safer.
- Do it a few times; the second or third is usually the natural one.
Doing it safely
The dip looks dramatic, but it only needs to go a short way back. The dipping partner supports the upper back with an open hand and bends their own knees; the partner being dipped keeps their core tight and holds on. Practice once without the kiss so you both know how far you're going.
Variations
A dip with a laugh instead of a kiss. A dip on the dance floor during your first dance. A silhouette dip at sunset. A reverse dip, where the partner usually dipped does the dipping.
