How to do the walking hand in hand pose
Also called: the walk, holding hands pose, walk toward the camera
The most common pose in every guide we read: walk together, holding hands, and forget the camera is there.
See the two of you in this pose
Step by step
- Hold hands with your arms relaxed, not stretched between you.
- Walk slowly toward the camera, then away, then side to side.
- Look at each other or talk about something real while you walk.
- Let the outside hands swing naturally; it keeps shoulders loose.
Tips
- Walk slower than feels natural; it photographs as relaxed.
- Walking away, glancing back over a shoulder, makes a second shot from the same moment.
Why photographers start with it
Fourteen of the 17 guides we analyzed include some version of walking together, more than any other pose. Movement takes the pressure off: you have something to do with your body, and you stop thinking about the camera.
It also gives the photographer several angles from one action: walking toward the camera, away from it, and across the frame.
Variations
Swing your joined hands. Lead your partner by the hand, glancing back. Stop mid-walk for a kiss. Walk with arms linked instead of hands held. On a beach, walk along the water line so the waves fill the background.
